Schreiner Group has announced its commitment to climate neutrality and the goals of the Paris Agreement, and has submitted a commitment letter to SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). The company says it is currently in the process of fine-tuning its climate neutrality concept, and plans to start climate-neutral manufacturing – supported by diverse actions – toward the end of this year.
The goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 °C. By submitting its commitment letter to SBTi, Schreiner Group has committed to this goal. Its commitment has already been reviewed and acknowledged by SBTi and published on the SBTi homepage. SBTi is a partnership of various environmentally focused non-profit organizations. The purpose of the initiative that includes the WWF and the Global Compact of the United Nations, among others, is to support companies in calculating and achieving their necessary share in climate protection. SBTi is the leading organization for validating science-based climate protection targets.
With its commitment to SBTi, Schreiner Group has also pledged to set itself a near-term target as well as to publish the target year of achieving full climate neutrality. For that purpose, the company had initially had its current corporate carbon footprint determined, which corresponds to Scope 1-3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocols. Subsequently, further energy savings potential was identified by means of an energy efficiency analysis and is now being implemented. In addition, Schreiner Group is going to name its specific climate protection goals to SBTi by the end of 2023.
The company is currently focused on reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Those are direct local emissions generated, for instance, by heating or operating the company’s fleet vehicles, and indirect emissions caused by purchased energy, i.e., primarily by electric power. Schreiner Group has already managed to reduce 70% of such emissions in the last ten years. They are expected to drop by another 90% in the second half of this year. The remaining emissions will be offset. Consequently, Schreiner Group will start climate-neutral manufacturing before the end of this year, as established in its strategic sustainability goal.
