John Wiley & Sons, Inc. and the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (SPSJ) have announced the winners of the 2004 annual SPSJ-Wiley Awards. The awards, which recognize young scientists who have demonstrated work showing considerable potential, are open to all members of the SPSJ under the age of 45. A committee of the SPSJ selects the winners. Two awards, each carrying a value of 250,000 yen, will be presented by Dr. Patrick Kelly, vice president and publishing director, Global Materials Science, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The awards ceremony will be held at the 53rd Symposium on Macromolecules at Hokkaido University on Sept. 16, 2004. The winners will present a lecture after the ceremony. This year's winners are as follows: Kyoko Nozaki, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, for "Asymmetric Synthesis of Optically Active Polymers Catalyzed by Metal Complexes"; and Takeo Sasaki, Science University of Tokyo, for "Photorefractive Effect of Liquid Crystalline Materials." The award winners will be invited by the editors of the chemistry and physics sections of the Journal of Polymer Science to publish a "Highlight" article outlining their work.
