Environmental & Regulatory Update

March 4, 2003
Prism eSolutions Adds ISO 14000 EMS Content to equation Product Line

Screen shot of the equation EMS software.
equation, Prism eSolutions’ Web-based platform that reduces ISO 9000 Quality Management System (QMS) implementation time and costs by half, now offers new content for ISO 14000 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification.

ISO 14000 EMS certification is becoming an increasingly important requirement in global industries, federal organizations and for federal contractors as a way to establish and maintain sound environmental and safety practices within businesses.

“Now more than ever, companies are faced with the challenges of maintaining environmental standards while keeping an eye on the bottom line,” says Pete Grier, director of environmental services of Prism eSolutions, Blue Bell, Pa. “Prism developed the equation EMS feature to help make the ISO 14000 EMS certification as affordable, efficient and straightforward as possible.”

A Permanent Asset

With equation EMS, ISO 14000 certification can be completed in as few as six months, vs. the 18-month industry standard. Once ISO implementation is complete, equation EMS becomes a permanent asset for EMS maintenance and other environmental projects. Additionally, equation EMS is an excellent tool that companies can use together with equation’s QMS support tools to complete a dual ISO 9000/ISO 14000 certification.

One major aspect of the equation management tool is its scalability for organizations with multiple sites in varying time zones. The system allows direct knowledge-sharing between facilities to cut down on the time and costs involved with meetings, travel, etc., resulting in a more cost-efficient implementation.

equation EMS provides companies with affordable and convenient ISO 14000 support and training with no information-technology installation or maintenance required. It addresses the entire ISO 14001 standard (the actual requirement in the ISO 14000 EMS), including procedures, review operation controls, aspect-impact analysis, and more. Features include:

• Step-by-step implementation;

• Overview guidance;

• Task instructions;

• Templates for project, knowledge, document-control management;

• An online reference library; and

• Online systems for processing corrective actions, internal audits and customer surveys.

equation is a cost-effective and user-friendly support tool for ISO 14000 EMS, ISO 9000 QMS, and ISO 9000:2000 QMS upgrade implementations. The platform is hosted and managed by Prism at a secure, third-party facility. Therefore, companies need only a computer terminal and Web browser to run the system. Additionally, all document formats are supported in the application, eliminating the need for industry standardization.

equation is available as an ASP (Application Service Provider), which is a Web-based application. It is also available as equationNET, where it is licensed, installed and managed on a company’s network behind secure firewalls. It is the ideal choice for larger companies with the IT equipment, support and the requirement to run the application in-house. With equationNET, companies can leverage their existing infrastructure for complete system control.
