According to biology professor Cheryl Hayashi's recent research, an individual spider can create multiple kinds of silk in its silk glands. The glue and fiber silks found in orb webs are inspiring scientists to produce new protein-based materials for use in a number of applications, including the medical, cosmetic and textile industries.
