PPG’s Protective and Marine Coatings business receives award for coatings performance on the restoration of the U.S. Capitol Dome.
PPG Industries recently announced its Protective and Marine Coatings business (PPG-PMC) has received the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) 2012 George Campbell Award. The honor recognizes the performance of PPG-PMC’s spot primer and finish coatings used in the restoration of the U.S. Capitol Dome in Washington, D.C.
The renovation project included two 100%-acrylic, waterborne enamel coatings from PPG—PITT-TECH® exterior spot primer and Pitt-Tech exterior finish DTM (direct-to-metal) satin industrial enamel, which was tinted to color-match the dome.
“It was an honor for PPG and me personally to be involved in a project that will be protecting one of the most recognizable buildings in the world,” said Todd DeBarba, technical sales representative, Protective and Marine Coatings, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
The George Campbell Award honors outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial or commercial coatings project. Because the U.S. Capitol Dome was originally constructed in the 1790s, and due to its unique structure, this restoration project required detailed planning and precise execution throughout multiple phases. Also, because of the Capitol Dome’s historic significance and status as a popular tourist attraction, all access points and staging areas around the project had to be meticulously maintained by the restoration crew.
Also honored were the Architect of the Capitol, which is charged by the U.S. Congress with upkeep of the Capitol grounds and other landmarks in Washington, D.C., and Aulson Company, Methuen,MA, a specialty contractor that removed 100 tons of 140-year-old, lead-based paint from the Capitol Dome and then applied 700 gal of new paint.
