Evonik recently announced that it has started up a new plant complex for the production of fumed silica in Antwerp in order to meet the high demand for products marketed under the name AEROSIL®. Typical applications include paints and coatings, advanced adhesive systems, transparent silicones, and non-combustible high-performance insulation materials. Evonik has invested a high-double-digit million euro amount in the new facility.
“We have a clear growth strategy for our silica business,” said Harald Schwager, deputy chairman of the executive board. “With these additional capacities, we will ensure the long-term supply of our customers.”
“We are pleased to be able to meet the customers’ requests for more quantities, and in particular for hydrophobic AEROSIL,” said Andreas Fischer, member of the management board for Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH. “Particularly important to us in this project was our own local supply of raw materials and the central location in Europe. The proximity to the international port of export in Antwerp is an important factor in the global supply of our customers.”
