NOTE: Due to continuing concerns related to COVID-19, Coatings Trends & Technologies will be a virtual event in 2020.

Hundreds of coatings formulators and chemists are expected to attend Coatings Trends & Technologies (CTT), which will be held September 9-10 in the Chicago suburb of Lombard, Ill. The event will feature educational conference sessions in a two-track format, as well as tabletop exhibits and various opportunities to network with industry colleagues.

Special Learning Opportunities

From 8:45-9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, keynote speaker George Pilcher, vice president of The ChemQuest Group, will discuss “The View From 2020: Where Is the Global Coatings Industry Today, and Where Is It Going?” Who will be the winners and losers if pandemic-induced consolidation continues, with the survivors either acquiring or replacing those that didn’t survive? While the economic toll of the pandemic will likely be dramatic, the question of whether it will be truly devastating or difficult-but-manageable (or somewhere in between) will be determined by many factors, including worldwide government economic intervention, that may not be completely clear for quite some time.

Thursday will kick off with a panel discussion from 8:35-9:35 a.m. Participants in the discussion, which will focus on “The Lab of the Future: Digitize to Accelerate New Product Development,” will include Sasha Novakovich, president and CEO of Alchemy Cloud, Inc.; Greg Williams, Ph.D., section manager, R&D Lab with BEHR; Jerry Powers, technology manager for Coatings–Americas, Chromaflo Technologies; and Paul Vragel, president of 4aBetterBusiness, Inc.

Conference Sessions

More than 40 industry experts will share details regarding the latest coatings-related issues and technologies during the two-day CTT conference. Each day’s sessions are organized into two tracks, with multiple topics featured throughout the day.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday morning’s tracks include Pigments/Colorants/Dispersants and Resin Developments. During the first session in the afternoon (1:20-3 p.m.), tracks will cover Architectural Coatings and Industrial Coatings. Rounding out the afternoon on Wednesday (3:35-5:15 p.m.) will be tracks focused on UV/EB Technology and Corrosion-Control Technology.

Thursday’s educational sessions begin at 10:10 a.m., with a track on Environment-Friendly Technology and another on Additive Advancements. Track 1 in the afternoon (1:30-2:35 p.m.) will focus on Special-Purpose Coatings, as well as Bio-Based/Sustainable Technology (2:40-3:45 p.m.). Taking a deep dive into Formulating Strategies, Track 2 will run all afternoon on Thursday (1:30-3:45 p.m.).

Exhibits and Networking

At CCT’s tabletop exhibits, companies will showcase their latest materials, equipment, technologies, and services for the coatings industry (see Tabletop Exhibitors). Exhibits will be open on Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 a.m., 9:45-10:30 a.m., 12:15-1:15 p.m., 3-3:30 p.m., and 5:15-6:30 p.m. On Thursday, exhibit hours are 7:30-8:30 a.m., 9:35-10:05 a.m., and 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Networking breakfasts, breaks, lunches, and Wednesday evening’s reception will be held concurrently with the tabletop exhibits. These sessions offer attendees myriad opportunities to make new contacts, discuss emerging issues involving the coatings industry, address challenges they may be having in their business, and even catch up with old friends.
