Sika Automotive recently announced that its SikaPower-550® G structural adhesive for automobile assembly has been named a finalist in the 2021 Edison Awards™ Engineering & Materials Science category. The winners will be determined and announced at the 2021 Edison Awards Gala in Fort Myers, Fla., on April 22, 2021.

Sika reports that the SikaPower-550 G adhesive combined the requirements of three separate Ford materials specifications into one single specification, with compatibility to steel and aluminum. A number of other requirements were also met:

  • Use in multiple areas of the body structure, including the hem-flange, necessitating inclusion of glass beads while maintaining crash-durable performance
  • Improvement in open time
  • Increased stress durability performance of the bond under constant static load in a corrosive environment
  • Improved humidity resistance
  • Engineered/formulated to cure at a lower bake temperature window

"It is truly an honor to be recognized as a finalist in the Edison Awards," said Greg Moran, Sika vice president and head of Global Marketing. "We are also grateful for our long-term partner Ford, who we worked closely with to bring this innovation to the market. Sika continuously looks forward to developing more innovations from concept to reality in the future."
