Huntsman has launched its ARALDITE® 2080 adhesive, a low-odor, non-flammable (according to CLP, flashpoint > 60°C), and primer-free structural acrylate adhesive that reportedly helps increase end-customer and employee satisfaction, especially in confined working environments, while delivering exceptional bond performance. Huntsman reports that the new adhesive solves many of the long-standing issues manufacturers have experienced when using traditional methyl methacrylate (MMA), polyurethane (PU), and other adhesive products.
For decades, manufacturers across the transportation, wind, and general assembly industries have used traditional MMA and PU-based adhesives for structural bonding applications, experiencing aggressive odors, flammability issues, high toxicity profiles, and added production time for surface preparation. Each of these issues can contribute to high operational costs and lower productivity, while factors such as toxicity and odor can be hazardous to worker health and wellbeing.
According to the company, ARALDITE 2080 adhesive solves these issues while also providing high bond strength and elongation, better flowability, and faster cure times. In addition, the new adhesive helps reduce costs with no need for primers or designated flammable storage areas while requiring less need for protective equipment and extensive training.
“This adhesive line can solve the long-standing issues associated with traditional MMA and PU adhesives and deliver sufficient bonding performance,” said José Fanjul, strategic marketing manager at Huntsman Advanced Materials. “It will be a game-changer for manufacturers who want a structural adhesive that not only increases productivity and saves costs, but also safeguards the wellbeing of their employees.”
According to Huntsman, key features of ARALDITE 2080 adhesive include:
- Low odor—creates up to 90% less smell than traditional MMA products
- Non-flammable classification—helps minimize costs for safety training, storage, transportation, and equipment while eliminating the need for the installation and maintenance of designated flammable storage areas
- No primer—eliminating the need for primer halves production times and reduces costs while providing the same bonding strength
- Low toxicity profile—an improved GHS classification means users will save on personal protective equipment costs and other risk management measures
